My customer segment was based around college students who
follow a “fitness lifestyle”. My prototypical customer is rather loosely based,
as many people can follow a “fitness lifestyle” and have expressed interest in
the business venture that I have offered. Instead, I’d like to note some
observations I’ve had of people who I have interviewed that I think would be
more likely to be a prototypical customer:
1.
Females tended to express more interest in the
application I offered. This could be tied to a closer connection to social
media that might interest them, as well as more accessible resources on those
platforms for women to integrate fitness into their lifestyle.
2.
When focused on body build and frame, all of my
interviewees tended to be around average build, or above average due to muscular
features. This indicates people with a more average build, either newcomers or
those already interested in fitness, to be more interested in the application
that I offer. However, this can be biased as I was not able to find many
interviewees who I deemed classified as over/underweight or of “extreme” builds.
3.
Age-wise, I’d assume my application could appeal
to all ages, but would primarily be focused around the ages of 20-30. This was
the range in which my interviewees primarily fell and is considered the optimal
age for the application that I offer.
4.
My customer’s hobbies would focus around fitness
and outdoor activities or being active on social media and nutritional focuses.
What I have in common with the
custom avatar built is that I’m a random college student myself. I have no
specific identity or needs to provide to most people, but I do follow a path of
a fitness routine and lifestyle. I identify with an average build with an
interest in fitness and outdoor activities, while also being the age of 21.
Since the application is still very much a prototype, it’s hard to say what
would differentiate my certain prototypical customer from one on the street,
besides seeing them at your local gym.
As a female college student I would agree that I tend to look on social media, mainly Instagram and Pinterest, for fitness inspiration and would definitely be interested in your app. I've found that guys aren't usually interested in the social media aspects of fitness but do utilize apps that give and/or facilitate workouts (i.e. interval timers, rep counters, etc).
ReplyDeleteHey Adam,
ReplyDeleteI think that this is the segment that is most connected to you or that you share common lifestyle or interests with. I think that out of sight out of mind has a bit to do with who you interviewed. You interview college aged students at the college. I looked into it a bit and found out that the average age of people with gym memberships is 40. Seems about right. I think a female demographic is spot on. I would just shift the age up a bit. Young people get encouraged just by looking in a mirror. Older women can get discouraged by looking in a mirror and could benefit from some outside encouragement.
You touched on a very important point when referring to your prototypical customer description as "loosely based." It is hard to narrow down an avatar description when your customer base could be anyone from any background. I think you still did a great job at narrowing down some common features you would expect from your customer such as the age range and hobbies.
